China's Haikou seafood export reaches record high level in 2008

The total seafood export reached 68,000 tonnes, valued at US$24.93 million, in Haikou, capital city of South China's Hainan Province, in 2008, according to the local marine and fishing bureau.

The export accounted for over 50 percent of the province's total and was a record high, in spite of the global economic downturn and the recent melamine scandal.

Some of the local seafood producers, such as Hainan Brich Aquatic Products Co Ltd and Hainan Sky-Blue Ocean Foods Co Ltd, changed their marketing tactics by selling their products to recognised supermarkets in the world directly rather than via dealers. Their products were exported to more than 40 nations and territories, like the US, the EU and Japan.

Meanwhile, some Hainan-based seafood companies succeeded in selling products at large scale chain supermarkets in China's top-tier cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing, said Zheng Daoying, head of the local marine and fishing bureau.
