Tanzania plagued with swine disease

An outbreak of a virulent swine disease has killed about 138 pigs in two regions, according to the Tanzanian authorities.

The outbreak was first reported on February 20, 2008. The livestock and fisheries ministry has restricted the transportation of pigs and pork products in a bid to prevent the disease from spreading. The culling of pigs in the affected areas has also been ordered.

In this outbreak, 117 pigs died in the central region of Morogoro while 21 pigs died in Dar es Salaam city.

The swine disease had first struck Tanzania back in 1993.
