EU to evaluate poultry water content levels

In order to protect consumers from having the risk of being overcharged, the EU Commission will review water content levels in poultry meat.

The presence of water in frozen poultry meat is allowed as part of normal preparatory process and may differ depending on the chilling method.

The amount of water content allowed in such products is regulated by the EU.

Mairead McGuinness, Ireland East Fine Gael MEP, said poultry meats are often charged according to weight and excess water equates to higher prices and these prices could be misleading and unfair to the consumer.

She said this review is important to ensure that the poultry industry is fairly represented and consumer information is updated.
