Consumption of more beef by Hawaii
The Hawaii Agricultural Statistics Service reports that we consumed 5,000 extra pounds of locally produced beef in 2004,
Commercial beef slaughter for local consumption rose 1 percent in 2004, to 446,000 pounds.
Despite the higher local consumption, Hawaii cattle marketings for 2004 totaled 45,500, down 14 percent from the year before. Exports hit 37,000 head, down 16 percent.
US beef production for 2004 rose 3 percent to 2.04 billion pounds.
The other meat
Hawaii pork production for 2004 was down 6 percent. National production was down 1 percent. Monthly production in Hawaii has lately been running 447,000 pounds, however, and that is up slightly.
