Finland's local meat consumption falls due to imports

Nearly a fifth of beef in Finland is already imported in the current year.

Finnish meat is losing its standing in consumption. In 2010, Finland's meat consumption increased by 3% from 2009.

The market share of imported meat in the consumption of beef went up by two percentage points to 18% in 2010. The share is estimated to increase to a fourth of consumption in the coming years.

In 2010, beef imports totalled 17.3mn kilos, up by 14% from 2009. Pork imports went up by 21% to 28.4mn kilos. The import of milk increased by 55% and that of yoghurt by 25% on-year, according to Gallup Food and Farm Facts.
