*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

Tumbling prices of broilers due to the bird flu epidemic dampened the confidence of farmers and slashed the sales of poultry feed. Methionine usages dropped inevitably, compelling sellers to cut prices further amid ample availability. However, as prices have fallen to new record lows, methionine producers and distributors were less willing to give discounts.

China's methionine imports surged to a new high of 19,225 tonnes, higher by 45% on-month, whereas exports increased 22% to 1,692 tonnes.

In Europe, prices of methionine for Q2 2017 deliveries were in the range of EUR2.45-2.50/kg.

Market forecast

Demand for methionine will continue to stay sluggish in China as the bird flu disease remains rampant. However, methionine sellers will be more cautious in cutting prices, which have broken new low records. Price falls of methionine are expected to slow in the coming period.
