First Vietnamese seafood shipments meet EU regulations

Around 200 tonnes of seafood from five businesses in the southern province of Kien Giang have been granted certificates for export to the EU market.

These are the first seafood exports to that market since the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing regulation came into effect.

Under the regulation effective on January 1, 2010, all seafood consignments exported to the EU market must certify their origin.

In order to penetrate this demanding market, businesses across the country have scrambled to comply with the regulation.

Meanwhile, the Kien Giang provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has organised four training courses for fishermen, businesses, fisheries associations, and captains to help them keep a fishing diary and record fishing coordinates.
