India developing reservoir fisheries to boost fish production

India's fisheries department is currently working to expand the number of reservoir fisheries to boost fish production and food security.

This development is the result of the cooperative fishing scheme introduced by the government.

Nearly 20 large reservoirs and about 32 small tanks and ponds have been earmarked for the scheme, and an extensive fish stocking operation for the reservoirs has already begun.

Fish production has been on the decline, and reservoir fisheries could be the answer to India's food security problem, according to Veerappa Gowda, director of State Fisheries.

If the reservoir stock is managed well, fishermen will be able to reap at least two major crops and one minor crop.

Villages surrounding the reservoirs have been asked to form groups, which will be given harvesting rights.

In addition, the National Fisheries Development Board has also announced its participation in reservoir fisheries development.
