UK egg market in transition as free-range eggs make its mark
UK's egg market is witnessing a rapid change in consumer behaviour, as free-range eggs look set to obtain a sizable position in the market.
Sales of free-range eggs have impressed in January 2008, as they account for more than half of the retail market value for the first time.
Free-range eggs have witnessed a 20-percent increase in volume and a 46-percent increase in value, meaning that one in four eggs sold in retail stores is free-range, according to latest statistics released by British Lion eggs, an information establishment on eggs production.
In January 2008, total egg sales volume was up by more than 1 percent with sales exceeding GBP56 million (US$111 million).
"We are well prepared to supply more free-range eggs if the market demands it, said Andrew Parker, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council.
