India revises up wheat output in Haryana state
Haryana's 2008-09 wheat output has been revised to 10.54 million tonnes, up from 10.33 million tonnes, due to warm weather and rains, a state farm department official said Thursday (Feb 26).
Ongoing warm temperatures are favourable for grain production, and the rain spell in the first half of February has boosted prospects of wheat yield, said B.S. Duggal, an additional director with the state farm department.
There was a scattered aphid attack on the wheat crop in the second half of February, but the problem was curbed in time by farmers using pesticide sprays.
Haryana is India's third-largest wheat producer and had an output of 10.24 million tonnes in 2007-08, according to government data.
