China milk powder imports up since scandal
China's imports of baby food and milk powder have risen through the port of Shanghai because of concerns about adulterated local dairy products, the Xinhua news agency cited an official as saying Wednesday (February 25).
Imports of baby food including dairy products rose 32.5 percent by weight between Sept. 15 and Feb. 15 from the same period a year earlier, Xinhua said. It cited Fang Yong, spokesman of the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
Shanghai port doesn't handle all of China's food products but does deal with about a quarter of the country's trade, the official Chinese news agency said.
It said China's leading dairy producers are still feeling the effects of the tainted milk product scandal, which surfaced last September and involved the industrial chemical melamine.
