US turkey imports to Russia resumes

On February 24 Rosselkhoznadzor's decision to lift the restrictions from two US enterprises manufacturing turkey meat, Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales LLC and Butterball LLC, took effect.

The materials on the inspection of a third enterprise have been sent to the Customs Union (CU) for approval. The two US enterprises from which the restrictions have been lifted previously supplied their products to Russia and therefore they do not need the approval of the CU to resume the supplies.

The ban on the supply of turkey meat was imposed in February 13 over the use of the growth stimulator ractopamine.

After taking some measures to prevent the use of ractopamine in the production of meat, submitting an appropriate programme, US manufacturers received the right to supply their products to Russia.

Russian veterinary inspectors last year inspected 15 poultry enterprises in the US, including three turkey manufacturers. Before the ban, over 200 US enterprises had a right to supply turkey to Russia.
