Bird flu confirmed in southwest Bhutan
An outbreak of bird flu has been reported in the Rinchending area in Phuentsholing, southwest Bhutan.
Three samples from poultry in Phuentsholing area sent for tests in Thailand and India have tested positive for bird flu.
The first death in poultry was reported on 13 February. Since then eight chickens have died. After conducting rapid tests, a total of 14 chickens tested positive.
Meanwhile, in Thimphu, livestock and Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) officials convened an emergency meeting to discuss ways to intensify surveillance and decontamination of the affected area. The meeting also agreed to officially notify the World Health Organisation for Animal Health.
Immediately after the news, veterinary, livestock and medical officials in Phuentsholing visited Rinchending area and culled around 28 chickens. People who had come in contact with the dead birds are also being screened for further investigation.
