British pork gaining popularity overseas
Buyers from abroad purchased 20,000 tonnes more fresh and frozen British pork and pork products in 2008 than the previous year with exports reaching 118,300 tonnes, up 20 percent.
British bacon was the most popular export, with value rising from 12,000 tonnes to more than 33,000.
Value of pork exports, including processed pork products and offal was worth GBP160 million to the UK's economy.
These impressive figures show that although sow carcass exports increased, the biggest rise was recorded for prime pork cuts, said Mick Sloyan, chief executive of British Pig Executive.
The rise in exports was particularly encouraging following the restrictions put in place during the foot-and-mouth disease in 2007, said Sloyan.
