EU suspends Uruguay's fish exports after inspection
The EU has suspended fish imports from Uruguay after inspections, a move that will affect 40 percent of Uruguay's annual seafood exports worth about US$200 million.
The suspension follows the inspections of eight fishing companies by EU health inspectors, with imports from four of the eight companies being blocked.
The rest of the companies were later suspended as well after Uruguay's National Marine Resources office performed their own inspections. They are currently trying to rectify the problems in order to resume exports.
National Marine Resources office's spokesman Daniel Montiel said he hoped that the EU suspension would be lifted by the end of March.
