Ukraine's February grain export to hit 1.5-1.6 million tonnes

Ukraine's grain exports will reach the level of 1.5-1.6 million tonnes in February 2012, stated Nikolai Prysiazhnyuk, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, on Wednesday (Feb 22).

Since the beginning of February, Ukraine already supplied 1.2 million tonnes of grains on foreign markets.

The Minister said that such low rates of grain exports are associated with difficult weather conditions that hindered shipment of grains in the ports, and the inability of the State Railway Administration of Ukraine (Ukrzaliznytsia) to provide rail cars for transportation of grains.

Previously, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasted grain exports from Ukraine in 2011/12 MY at the level of 26 million tonnes. However, later Prysiazhnyuk, Minister of Agrarian Policy, said that taking into account the volume of already delivered grain volumes, its exports will be less. However, he expressed the hope that by the end of the current MY, Ukraine will supply two million tonnes of grains on foreign markets per month.

According to preliminary data of the State Statistics Service, in 2011 Ukraine produced 56.7 million tonnes of grains, an increase of 44.3% compared to 2010.
