Denmark swine numbers may stabilise

After years of decline, pig population is going back to normal based on recent statistical research of the Danish Meat Association (DMA).

While figures show that size of the total pig herd is still declining (-7.4 percent year-on-year), sow population decrease (-2.7 percent year-on-year) was the lowest in the last five years.

In 2007, breeding sow numbers decreased by 11.4 percent.

Growing numbers of piglet exports in the last couple of months have contributed to a shrinking finisher and weaner pig population below 50 kg.

The count was being held at 3,500 farm sites at January 1, 2009.
