US poultry and egg exports hit US$4 billion in 2007

US poultry and egg exports have earned US$4 billion, up nearly 40 percent from 2006, said the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) on Wednesday (February 20, 2008).

US broiler exports reached 2.6 million tonnes, up 10 percent from 2006, while the value increased by 48 percent to US$2.7 billion, both of which have set records.

The top three destinations for US broiler exports in 2007 are Russia, China and Mexico. They accounted for a total of 1.3 million tonnes, 51 percent of export volume, and 47 percent of export value of US$1.3 billion.

China's swine disease problems have lowered its pork production, which contributed to its high poultry import volume.

US broiler exports to Mexico decreased by 12 percent, but the value is up by 11 percent to US$221.4 million.

Table eggs exports reached 78.7 million dozen, up 42 percent, with Hong Kong and Canada being the top markets. Export value is also up 74 percent to US$63.5 million.

Total export value for egg products in 2007 reached US$74.2 million, up 8 percent. Exports to Japan have decreased to US$25.3 million from US$31.2 million in 2006.

USAPEEC is expecting exports to continue strongly in 2008.
