US milk production up 1 percent in Jan

Milk production in 23 major states in the US during January totalled 14.9 billion pounds, up 1 percent from January 2008.

Production per cow in the 23 states averaged 1,746 pounds in January, 5 pounds above January 2008.

Milk cows on farms in the 23 states totalled 8.51 million head, 58,000 head more than January 2008, but down 12,000 head from December 2008.
