China's Shandong to export 2,300 tonnes of poultry to EU
Nine poultry companies in China's Shandong Province recently gained orders to export 2,300 tonnes of cooked meat products to the EU, the Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau disclosed.
An estimated 100,000 tonnes of poultry products will be exported to the EU yearly in the future.
The European Commission on July 30, 2008 permitted EU countries to resume importing cooked meat products from nine Shandong companies. It has prohibited imports of China's animal products since January 2002.
One of the companies, Zhucheng Delicate Import and Export Co. Ltd exported 60 tonnes of cooked chicken products to the EU in December 2008. Since then, Shandong has exported 258 tonnes of poultry products worth US$1.29 million in 14 batches to the EU.
EU is a major poultry product market globally as it imports about 700,000 tonnes of poultry products per year. Brazil and Thailand are the main suppliers with the latter not exporting more than 340,000 tonnes of the products yearly.
