US and Canada cattle inventory falls 2 percent

Inventory of all cattle and calves in the US and Canada totalled 107.7 million head as of January 1, 2009, down 2 percent from a year ago.

All cows and heifers that have calved fell 2 percent on-year to 46.6 million head.

All cattle and calves in the US as of January 1 declined 2 percent on-year to 94.5 million head. All cows and heifers that have calved also decreased 2 percent to 41 million head.

All cattle and calves in Canada as of January 1 dropped 5 percent on-year to 13.2 million head. All cows and heifers that have calved decreased 6 percent on-year to 5.63 million head.
