South Korean FMD counter-measures to go well
The South Korean government announced extensive measures to stop environmental pollution in regions where slaughtered cattle and pigs were dumped following the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
The measures to combat FMD are centred on monitoring the burial sites and surrounding areas using up-to-date devices and introducing a soil contamination warning system to prevent pollution of the areas by leachate.
The measures call for a systematic monitoring of groundwater quality around the roughly 4,600 burial sites. The government will conduct water quality surveys for 3,000 wells within a 300-metre radius of the burial sites.
