Finland sees 3.7 billion kilogrammes in grain harvest for 2012

Finland's overall grain harvest in 2012 was about 3.7 billion kilogrammes, according to the country's Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

This nearly matches the harvest in 2011, but there were changes between grain types. Crop damage decreased the harvest of nearly all plants more than in previous years.

The harvest area for wheat was about 10% smaller than in the previous year. This was mainly due to a decrease in the harvest area for winter wheat, for the area for spring wheat remained practically unchanged. Winter wheat crop damage was nearly non-existent, but it has been reported that about 4% of the sowing area of spring wheat was completely destroyed. The yield per hectare for both types increased slightly, but the total production of wheat decreased by 9% to about 887 million kilogrammes.

In 2012, the area used for rye cultivation decreased by nearly 25% compared to 2011, but the yield per hectare increased slightly. However, this increase was not enough to compensate for the decrease in cultivation area, and rye production decreased by about 18% to 64 million kilogrammes.

The 2012 barley harvest of about 1.6 billion kilogrammes was 4% higher than in 2011.

The oat harvest in 2012 was about 1.1 billion kilogrammes, which is 3% more than in the previous year.
