Prices of piglets, live hogs and pork soar in China
Prices for pork products and feed went up in January this year and will continue to rise, according to China's animal husbandry department of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The most significant price increases on year was that for piglets whose price shot up 31.2 percent on-year and rising 5.9 percent in the past one month. In fact, prices for all pig products recorded at least a 20 percent increase on-year. This marked the impact of pig diseases raging through the country clashing with the high demand for pork during the upcoming Spring Festival.
Prices of live chickens and maize also recorded near 20-percent increases. Price increase for beef however, was a relatively modest 5.9 percent.
Of the agricultural products listed, only milk prices recorded a decrease, falling 0.5 percent from year-ago prices.
