India urges Bangladesh to cancel ban on chicken import

India is urging Bangladesh to lift its ban on India's day-old chicks, previously imposed as part of anti-bird flu measures.

The Indian high commissioner in Dhaka, Pinaki Ranjan Chakravorty assured Bangladeshi officals all necessary measures would be taken to ensure that all poultry products entering Bangladesh were completely safe.

Bangladesh last year banned import of chicks from 56 countries, including India following a massive spread of bird flu.

Dhaka also had previously banned import of poultry from many countries before 2006 to protect the country's burgeoning poultry industry.
