Russia plants winter grains for 2009 harvest on 17.1 million hectares
Russia planted winter grains for the 2009 harvest on 17.1 million hectares, which is 300,000 hectares more than was planted for the 2008 harvest, the Agriculture Ministry announced Friday (February 13).
Russia's agricultural markets analyst SovEcon said earlier the country was likely to harvest this year between 87 million and 96 million tonnes of grain compared with 105.5 million tonnes in 2008.
SovEcon said winter grains would be planted on 17 million hectares and the expected winter grain harvest would be 42 million-48 million tonnes.
Spring grains planted area is expected at 31 million hectares and spring grain harvest at 45 million-48 million tonnes.
