Brazil estimates 0.7% crop fall this year
The Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE) revises down Brazil's 2012 crop production of cereals, vegetables and oilseed to 158.7 million tonnes, a 0.7% decline from 2011's 159.9 million tonnes.
According to IBGE, the reduction in forecast is due to a drought between December and January, especially in the South of Brazil.
The bureau in December made a forecast of 160.3 million tonnes.
Brazil's three main crops rice, soy and corn are seen falling by 14.9% and 6.4% and rising by 11.4%, respectively, against 2011.
Planted area in 2012 is seen reaching 50.6 million hectares, 4% more than in 2011. Brazil's three main crops rice, soybean and corn account for 90.7% of output and 83% of planted area.
