India 2008-09 wheat output seen at 77.78 million tonnes
                      


India's wheat output in 2008-09 is expected to fall to 77.78 million tonnes, down from the final estimate of last year's production of 78.57 million tonnes, according to the latest federal government estimate.

 

Government officials had earlier said they expected 2008-09 wheat output would be at least at the same level as last year.

 

India's total foodgrain production is expected to fall to 227.88 million tonnes from 230.78 million tonnes in 2007-08.

 

The winter-sown oilseed crop output is expected to rise to 9.64 million tonnes from 9.04 million tonnes a year ago.

              

Rapeseed crop output is expected to be 6.98 million tonnes compared with 5.83 million tonnes in 2007-08, the estimate showed.
