Malaysia's state of Sabah committed to fish production

The fisheries sector contributes significantly to Sabah's economy and the state government is committed to nurture this important sector to its full potential, State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, said at the launching of Wetlands Day 2007.

Sabah is one of the top fish producing states in Malaysia with exports fetching about RM400 to RM450 million a year, the Borneo Bulletin reported.

The state is currently producing about 200,000 tonnes of fish annually valued at about RM730 to RM800 million.

Rahim said Sabah's fish production is projected to reach about 457,000 tonnes with an estimated value of RM 2.4 billion in 2010 with the help of modern fishing technology and expansion of aquaculture production.
