British cattle producers warned on older cattle

The English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) has warned British cattle producers on Feb 9 to check and verify the records of their animals before slaughtering them.

The warning was given after 41 animals born prior to Aug 1996 were presented for slaughter, since changes to the Over-Thirty-Month rule were made in November last year.

EBLEX stated that farmers who mistakenly present older cattle for use in the food chain are putting the whole UK industry's future export prospects in peril. Farmers who breach the rules risk getting a heavy fine.

Richard Ali, EBLEX chief executive said they do want to see British producers facing prosecution for making such mistakes. He urged them to take great care in checking details, especially of older animals.
