Australia's beef exports to China soar by 371% in 2013
Australian beef and veal exports to China skyrocketed 371% on-year to 154,833 tonnes during 2013, accounting for 14% of the country's total annual shipments, reported Meat and Livestock Australia.
At 134,301 tonnes, grass-fed beef accounted for 87% of beef exports to China, while the volume of grain-fed beef rose by 444% on-year to 20,531 tonnes.
Meat and Livestock Australia says that with the US and Brazilian beef re-entering the Chinese market, Australia's red meat export business is under pressure. However, with a complete industrial chain for beef production and large-scale expansions, Australia will be able to hold the ground in the competition for market share.
