Alaska Sausage recalls products over possible Listeria contamination

Alaska Sausage Company Inc., in Anchorage, Alaska, is recalling some 872 pounds of sausage products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday (Feb 6).

The products being recalled include three-pound packages of Alaskan Sausage Links with Reindeer Meat bearing the package code "02709," a sell-by date of "03/22/09" and the establishment number "EST. 17866" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Also involved in the recall are one- and three-pound packages of German Brand Cooked Bratwurst with the package code "02709", a sell-by date of "03/02/09", and the establishment number "EST. 17866" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The sausage products were produced on January 27, 2009 and distributed to institutions and retail establishments in Alaska.

The problem was discovered through the firm's microbiological sampling program.

FSIS has classified the recall as a Class 1 Recall, which means that this contamination is a health hazard situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
