Russia agrees to import more Canadian beef

Russia has agreed to raise its beef imports from Canada, Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said February 4.

Canadian beef producer Cargill obtained permission to export its products to Russia after a recent meeting between Ritz and Russian Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik in Germany.

Cargill estimates that Canadian beef exports to Russia could increase by about US$2 million as a result of the agreement.

Canadian beef exports to Russia amounted to more than US$20 million in 2010 compared with US$5.5 million a year earlier.
