Vietnam creates guidelines for environment-friendly aquaculture farming
The aquaculture industry in Vietnam has been, in the past two decades, one of the fast-growing sectors in the country. In 2006, the industry has tripled its earnings to US$3.3 billion or 3.8 million tonnes of seafood exports from the previous year's 1 million tonnes or US$2.65 billion.
These developments have Vietnamese fishery officials set a higher target export revenue of US$4 billion to US$5 billion by 2010 from the previous goal of US$2.5 billion which was aimed in 2005.
However, the sector's progress has also contributed to environmental problems, particularly in coastal areas such as the deterioration of coastal habitats and major marine resources. To address these issues, the Ministry of Fisheries and its attached agencies under the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank has created guidelines for environmental management for aquaculture investments in the country to guide local farmers as well as foreign business groups who are keen on venturing on Vietnam's promising aquaculture sector.
