Smithfield expects smooth sailing in merger with PSF

US top pig producer Smithfield Foods and Premium Standard Farms say they hope to complete their merger by the end of the month.

Smithfield, Virginia-based Smithfield Foods Inc. and Kansas City, Missouri-based Premium Standard Farms, Inc. announced that each has certified substantial compliance with the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice.

The Justice Department requested additional information last year about Smithfield's pending acquisition of PSF. Smithfield said both companies remain hopeful that the Antitrust Division will complete its review that would allow a merger before the first calendar quarter of 2007.
