Norway's January seafood exports totalled NOK4.8 billion (US$877 million), an increase of 15% or NOK636 million (US$116 million) as compared to January 2012.
According to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), the value of Norwegian salmon exports in January totalled NOK2.8 billion (US$512 million), an increase of NOK834 million (US$152 million) or 43% compared to January last year. The average price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon increased from NOK25.83 (US$4.72) to NOK34.66 (US$6.33) per kilogramme.
In the same period, the volume of exports of all Norwegian salmon products increased by 8,000 tonnes to a total of 77,000 tonnes. France, Poland and Russia were the biggest importers of Norwegian salmon.
In January, exports of Norwegian fjord trout increased in value by NOK102 million (US$18.6 million) or 101% to a total of NOK203 million (US$37 million). Russia was the biggest market in January.
The value of exports of Norwegian herring in January declined by NOK240 million (US$44 million) or 40% to a value of NOK365 million (US$66.7 million) from January last year. The steepest fall was in exports to Ukraine, down in value by NOK75 million (US$13.7 million) to a total of NOK21 million (US$3.8 million).
Russia was the biggest market for Norwegian herring, with exports in January valued at NOK92 million (US$16.8 million), down by NOK63 million (US$11.5 million) compared to the same month last year.
In January, exports of mackerel from Norway fell in value by NOK208 million (US$38 million) or 54% to a total of NOK180 million (US$33 million). Exports to China showed the biggest fall, down by NOK66 million (US$12.1 million) to a total of NOK25 million (US$4.6 million).
Russia was the biggest market for mackerel from Norway, with exports in January valued at NOK26 million (US$4.7 million), down by NOK13 million (US$2.4 million) from January last year.
Exports of clip fish were up in value in January by NOK74 million (US$13.5 million) or 22% to a total of NOK414 million (US$75.6 million). Exports to Brazil showed the biggest growth, up in value by NOK36 million (US$6.6 million) to a total of NOK250 million (US$45.7 million).
Exports to Portugal increased in value by NOK30 million (US$5.5 million) to a total of NOK77 million (US$14.1 million). The value of exports of salted fish in January totalled NOK37 million (US$6.8 million), on a par with January last year. Portugal remains the biggest market for salted fish from Norway, with exports in January valued at NOK16 million (US$3 million). This is NOK2 million (US$365,000) up on January last year. Exports to the second biggest market, Spain, fell in value in January by just under NOK1 million (US$183,000) to a total of NOK10 million (US$1.8 million).
In January, the value of exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian cod increased by NOK37 million (US$6.8 million) or 8% to a total of NOK520 million (US$95 million). Denmark was the biggest market, with exports in January valued at NOK110 million (US$20 million).
