Russia restores five percent import tariff on soymeal

Russia has restored the import tariff of five percent of the customs value on soymeal, an important poultry and pork feed, in order to protect domestic soy processors, the government said on Thursday (Feb 5).

The tariff will become effective one month after a government order is published in an official newspaper and it will remain in force for nine months.

A new tariff is normally set for nine months, after which the government has to decide whether to extend it indefinitely or to abolish it.

Russian soymeal imports declined in the 2007/08 season ended last September to 779,400 tonnes from 784,600 a year before, after Russia had commissioned a big soy processing plant in the commune of Kaliningrad.

Argentina and the Netherlands were top soymeal suppliers in 2007/08.

Russiascrapped the tariff on soy in 2003 and 2005 to stimulate domestic poultry and animal breeding.
