India exports 488,758 tonnes soymeal in January 2006

India's January soymeal exports rose sharply to 488,758 tonnes from 176,023 tonnes the same period last year, the Soybean Processors Association said Monday.

"There is considerable demand from countries such as Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Vietnam," said Rajesh Agarwal, the association's chairman.

He said good harvests of beans, stable bean prices and larger volumes being crushed by processors also led to the rise in exports.

Soymeal exports during the April 2005-January 2006 period rose to 2.27 million tonnes from 1.50 million tonnes from the same period the year before, said the association.
