Nippon Suisan Kaisha posts 6-7% revenue increase in fiscal Q3

For the fiscal third quarter, Japanese seafood producer Nippon Suisan Kaisha (Nissui) will post a 6-7% increase in its revenue, a company executive said.

Nissui is scheduled to report its third quarter earnings on February 5.

Susumu Kaneda, senior managing executive officer and director for the company, indicated that its sales and revenue were "not too bad". Revenue in the seafood segment has grown thanks to the strong price trend but, he said, sales in the food segment have remained stable.

He pointed out the two challenges that the industry is facing, safety and security of food and currency exchange rate, stressing the necessity to strengthen the response toward these issues.

Regarding food safety, the recent food-poisoning scandal involving a Maruha Nichiro subsidiary has shaken Japan since last December. Because of this, sales of frozen food for the industry temporarily declined by 15% on-year according to Kaneda.

The group has reaped sales of US$200 million for its overseas products, said the executive. It has set the foreign currency rate forecast at JPY108 against the US dollars for the 2014 fiscal year.
