Australia's low-grade wheat finds an Asian market
Downgraded wheat from Victoria's Western District, Australia has found a niche market in Southeast Asian flour mills.
Agfarm accounts manager Sam Heagney said that the containerised wheat market has saved the grain from feed markets.
While the grain is not great, with a decent protein level, mills can buy it and mix it with better quality grain, he said.
"Whereas a lot of that grain would have just gone into the bulk handlers system and been downgraded simply to feed, now with a bit of on-farm storage and other segregations, and a containerised market, there are a lot more opportunities for that grain," he said.
