Turkey detects second bird flu case
Turkey Agriculture Ministry said on Sunday (February 3, 2008) that several dead chickens are tested positive for bird flu in a small village in northern Turkey.
The ministry added that the village near the Black Sea city of Samsun has been placed under quarantine and dozens of chickens have been culled in order to stop the disease from spreading.
However, it is not confirmed whether the bird flu virus in question is the deadly H5N1 strain, which is being tracked by world health authorities.
Last month, a H5N1 outbreak killed dozens of chickens at a village near the northern Black Sea city of Zonguldak. The village was promptly quarantined and 1,000 chickens were culled there and in three nearby villages.
