Vietnam to temporarily halt Australian poultry imports

A decision to temporarily suspend imports of poultry products from Australia's South Eastern Victoria state has been issued by Vietnam, state media reported Thursday (Feb 2).

With this move, Vietnam has joined Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong to ban poultry imports from Australia, however, unlike other countries, Hanoi still allows poultry imports from other Australian states which are not affected by bird flu.

The Australian state was forced to destroy 24,000 ducks in farms in New Gisbone and Mickleham after local authorities found that the animals had been infested with flu viruses.

Meanwhile, bird flu was detected to reoccur in central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. Local authorities have applied measures to prevent the disease from further spread.
