Brazil's January corn exports up 167 percent

Brazilian corn exports in January increased 166.8 percent on-year to 1.046 million tonnes.

Brazil shipped 392,000 tonnes of corn in January 2008. In December, shipments rose to an all time high of 1.3 million tonnes.

The increased corn volume contrasted with the drop in soy shipments, which amounted to 500,000 tonnes compared to 599,000 tonnes in January 2008.

Brokers estimate that another 700,000 tonnes of corn may be exported in February, compared to the record volume of 357,000 tonnes in February 2007.

"The dollar factor is the main impulse in the market now," said the analyst Leonardo Sologuren, of Céleres.
