Mexican state tops shrimp production in 2011

The Mexican state of Sinaloa is now the nation's key producer of shellfish aquaculture after it registered a record output of 50,000 tonnes of shrimp in 2011.

This performance was achieved by the development of sustainable fisheries policies which included the application of good farming practices and the certification of laboratories.

Therefore, Sinaloa was the only area with increased production of shrimp from aquaculture. The production was 30% higher than in 2010, which was 39,604 tonnes.

The states of Sonora trailed behind with a production of 40,679 tonnes, while in third was Baja California Sur, with 5,405 tonnes.
