Komi Republic plans to develop aquaculture sector

Russian federal subject Komi Republic plans to increase aquaculture production to meet local needs.

Annual fish product consumption in Komi Republic totals 18,000 tonnes but domestic production is a mere 260 tonnes. Last year, fish production in Komi rose 42%, said the Minister of Agriculture Sergey Chechetkin.

The minister said local authorities plan to increase fish production up to 1,500 tonnes over the next four years by developing the fish farming sector. But that is a difficult target because Komi has few lakes and no seashore. The only possibility is to use flowing waters and streams.

In autumn this year, the cooperative KomiRyba will establish a special manufacturing entity that will unite the production from four local companies.
