Vietnam's Ca Mau urea fertiliser plant begins operations

Vietnam's state-run Ca Mau Urea Fertilizer Plant managed by PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemical Corporation (DPM) began producing its first product on January 30.

The plant with total investment of US$780 million, will be handed over to DPM in February, the Thoi Bao Kinh Te newspaper reported Tuesday (Jan 31).

Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce 800,000 tonnes of urea annually, meeting 40% of the country's demand for urea fertiliser.

The plant, started to be built in 2008, is a part of the Ca Mau Gas-Electricity-Fertilizer Industrial complex, which is projected to produce a combined value of VND34 trillion (US$1.61 billion) and create 1,200 jobs.

DPM, the leading fertiliser supplier in Vietnam, plans to supply 1.4 million tonnes of urea fertiliser to the local market in 2012. Of the amount, 850,000 will come from its Phu My Fertilizer Plant and the rest will be from the newly-operating Ca Mau Plant.
