Thailand's pork prices surge on supply shortage

Due to a slowdown in pigs' growth and shortage of pork supply, prices of pork in many provinces in Thailand have gone up.

In the north-eastern province of Sakon Nakhon, an increase in retail pork price by THB20 (US$0.61) per kilogramme has been reported in a local fresh market, bringing the price up to THB160 (US$4.86) a kilogramme. One of the vendors admitted that the price had been on the rise for 10 days already and the reason was the cold weather which had delayed the growth of pigs, leading to supply shortage in the market.

In Meaung district of Yala province, pork price began its continuous surge last week and was likely to go even higher in the next couple of days when Chinese New Year arrives. However, the number of customers has not declined much and prices of vegetables are still stable.
