Four new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at various commercial broiler farms located in Gandaki were reported by the Nepali veterinary authorities.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. five on January 21, 2013.
A total of 3,160 birds were found susceptible, out of which 1,112 cases were reported. The reportedly affected birds were found dead, while the remaining 2,048 were destroyed.
The source of the bird flu outbreaks remains inconclusive.
According to the report, the birds showed respiratory distress, nervous signs and all affected birds died.
Cleaning and disinfection activities in the infected premises are completed. Intensive surveillance activities are on-going throughout the country.
