Olymel's final offer to keep Quebic plant open

Canadian pork producer Olymel has given unionised workers until Tuesday to decide whether to accept an offer that would keep the plant open.

Olymel president Rejean Nadeau said if the workers do not accept the latest offer, the money-losing plant near Quebec city, would close down.

On Dec 4, Olymael announced the closure of two other Quebec plants next year, cutting almost 560 jobs, as the industry restructures due to global competition and a strong Canadian dollar.

Olymel accounts for 60 percent of Quebec pork production. The company ships about half its production to the US, Japan and Australia.
