Peru to launch national aquaculture plan

Peru's National Aquaculture Development Plan (PNDA) for the 2010-2015 period will enter into force the first week of February.

The primary aim of the plan is to guide the process of aquaculture development through the mobilisation of financial resources from the public and private sectors, and to boost international cooperation, said Minister of Production (Produce) Jose Gonzales.

The minister also plans to meet the representatives of some mining companies to study aquaculture projects in detail.

The government's goals in aquaculture include:
  • Increase aquaculture sector production between 95,000 and 110,000 tonnes and the commercialised volume of aquaculture products in the internal market between 16,000 and 18,000 tonnes;

  • Augment the volume of exports between 25,000 and 27,000 tonnes and their value between US$170 million and US$186 million; and to raise per capita consumption of aquaculture products between 0.86 and 0.94 grammes;

  • Boost private investment by 50%, credits for aquaculture by 100%, the areas available for activity development by 15%, and aquaculture rights (major and minor scale authorisations and concessions in the marine and continental arena) by 20%;

  • Reduce imports of shrimp post larvae by 30% as the national seed production supplies 30% of total demand;

  • Diminish trout roe imports by 5% as the supply of this species of good quality will depend on the success of research.

The Ministry disclosed that it will establish four centres of health reference and promote four research programmes for aquaculture, each for one species.
